The van Reenenschool is situated in the coastal town of Bergen, near
woods, dunes and sea on one side and the famous Dutch ‘polders’ on the other.
Bergen is of old an artist community where many painters, writers and poets have
resided and still do so. The schoolhouse, a beautiful building in the style of
the Amsterdam School of Architects, was built in the 1920’s. It currently has
about 225 students from 4 to 12 years old, divided over 9 classes and approx. 17
teachers. The van Reenenschool (named after the Bergen mayor who founded the
school) is a Dutch public school, meaning non-denominational and funded by the
state. It emphasizes the importance of a caring, safe environment for the
children, high academic goals and a central place for the creative arts within
its curriculum.
